INDUSTRIAL HEATING RADIANT TUBE AND WARM AIR HEATING

RADIANT TUBE HEATERS · WARM AIR HEATERS · UNIT HEATERS · MAKE-UP AIR · DESTRATIFICATION · ALL MAJOR BRANDS · NORTH OF ENGLAND

Industrial space heating systems — radiant tube heaters, warm air heaters, and unit heaters — are the primary heating solution across the North of England's extensive warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing sector. Millions of square metres of industrial space across Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, and beyond are heated by these systems — and when they fail in winter, the consequences for the workforce and operations can be immediate and serious.

SMR Gas Maintenance engineers have over 25 years of hands-on experience with the full range of industrial radiant tube and warm air heating systems found across the North of England. We service, maintain, repair, and certify all types and all brands — from high-intensity radiant tube heaters in demanding manufacturing environments to low-intensity radiant systems in large distribution centres, and all types of warm air heating equipment across the industrial and commercial sector.

Emergency Breakdown Response

Industrial heating failures in winter require fast specialist response. Our engineers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency radiant tube and warm air heater breakdowns across the North of England — carrying diagnostic equipment and commonly required spare parts to maximise the chance of a first-visit repair.Common faults we diagnose and repair:

  • Ignition failure and burner lockout
  • Flame detection faults — UV scanner failure, thermopile failure
  • Gas valve failure — slow opening, non-opening, leaking seat
  • Combustion air fan failure — motor failure, capacitor failure, blade damage
  • Tube cracking and burn-through — emergency isolation and assessment
  • Flue system failures and blockages
  • Controls and thermostat faults
  • Gas pressure and supply problems

Combustion Analysis & Efficiency Optimisation

Poorly tuned industrial heating systems waste significant gas across large industrial spaces — particularly in high-bay warehouses where even a modest improvement in combustion efficiency across multiple heaters can deliver meaningful reductions in annual energy costs. Our engineers carry out full combustion analysis on all types of industrial heating equipment and tune burners to optimal performance.

Planned Preventative Maintenance Contracts

Structured planned maintenance for industrial heating systems across single and multi-site operations. We tailor PPM programmes to the specific equipment lists, site requirements, and production or operational schedules of each client — providing annual services, combustion analysis, and priority emergency response under a single contract. PUWER-compliant service documentation and HSE-ready records provided on every visit.

Destratification System Servicing

Large-volume industrial spaces — particularly high-bay warehouses and manufacturing facilities — lose significant heat to stratification, with warm air rising to ceiling level while working areas remain cold. Gas-fired destratification fan systems address this by circulating warm air from ceiling level back to floor level. We service and maintain gas-fired destratification systems across the North of England.

Make-Up Air Unit Servicing

Gas-fired make-up air units — used in manufacturing and processing environments to supply tempered fresh air to replace air exhausted from the building — require specialist maintenance beyond standard heating equipment. We service make-up air units across the North of England, covering temperature controls, airflow management, gas combustion systems, and all associated safety devices.

Loading Bay Heater Servicing

Loading bay gas-fired heating systems — including dock leveller heaters, dock seal heating, and loading bay radiant heating — require specialist attention given the demanding environment of frequent door openings, vehicle movements, and exposure to external conditions. We service loading bay heating systems across the North of England's logistics and distribution sector.

Radiant Tube Heating — Technical Overview

Radiant tube heaters work on a fundamentally different principle from warm air heating. Rather than heating the air in a space, they generate infrared radiation through a heated ceramic or steel tube — typically operating at surface temperatures between 300°C and 900°C depending on tube type and intensity — and radiate that heat downward to warm people, objects, and the floor directly below.

This makes them significantly more efficient than warm air heating in:

High-bay warehouses and distribution centres — where warm air rises to ceiling level and is lost before it reaches the working area. Radiant heat warms the floor level directly regardless of ceiling height.

Buildings with frequent door openings — loading docks, vehicle workshops, and production facilities with high air change rates lose warm air constantly. Radiant heat is not affected by air movement.

Selective area heating — radiant tube heaters can be zoned and directed to heat specific working areas rather than an entire building volume.

Rapid response — radiant heat is felt almost immediately after startup, unlike warm air systems that take time to bring the air temperature up.Understanding these principles is important when diagnosing performance issues, specifying replacements, or advising clients on system upgrades — and it's the kind of knowledge that separates a specialist industrial heating engineer from a general gas engineer attempting industrial work.

Types of Radiant Tube Heater We Service

High-Intensity Radiant Tube Heaters High-intensity radiant tube heaters operate at higher surface temperatures with shorter tube lengths — typically used in applications requiring intense, focused radiant heat in specific areas. Common in vehicle workshops, sports halls, aircraft hangars, and selective area heating applications.

Low-Intensity Radiant Tube Heaters Low-intensity radiant tube heaters — the most widely installed type across the North of England's warehousing and manufacturing sector — operate at lower surface temperatures across longer tube runs, providing even, comfortable radiant heat across large floor areas. Available in U-tube and straight-tube configurations.

U-Tube Radiant Systems U-tube configurations route the radiant tube in a U-shape from burner head, across the space, and back — with the flue gases exhausting at the same end as the burner. Common in medium-span applications.

Straight-Through Tube Systems Straight-through configurations run the tube in a single straight run with separate flue connection at the far end. Used in longer-span applications.

Continuous Linear Radiant Systems Continuous linear radiant systems — sometimes called low-intensity radiant heating pipework — run heated water or gas-fired radiant tubes in continuous circuits across very large spaces. Used in major distribution centres and large-span manufacturing facilities.

Warm Air Heater Types We Service

Direct-Fired Warm Air Heaters Direct-fired units pass combustion gases directly through the heat exchanger into the air stream — highly efficient but requiring correct flue management. Widely used across industrial and commercial premises throughout the North of England.

Indirect-Fired Warm Air Heaters Indirect-fired units separate combustion gases from the heated air stream using a heat exchanger — suitable for applications where combustion products cannot be introduced to the heated space. Used in food production, pharmaceutical, and sensitive manufacturing environments.

Unit Heaters Compact self-contained warm air heating units — typically ceiling-mounted — used in workshops, smaller industrial units, and commercial premises. Covering all major unit heater configurations.

Roof-Mounted Warm Air Units Roof-mounted heating and ventilation units providing large-scale warm air heating to industrial and commercial spaces from above. Full service including roof access and safety procedures.
