Industrial Gas Engineers Preston: 2026 Compliance Guide for Factories

Published 2 October 2026 · SMR Gas Maintenance Ltd

If your business in Preston uses gas for heating, hot water or production, someone has to keep that plant safe, legal and running. This guide explains what an industrial gas engineer actually does, what the law expects of you as the business, which paperwork you should hold, and how to plan the year so that gas work fits around your operation rather than interrupting it.SMR Gas Maintenance Ltd are industrial and commercial gas engineers based at Higher Walton, Preston. We have worked only on industrial and commercial gas since 1999 and we are Gas Safe registered (562186).

What an industrial gas engineer looks after

Commercial gas work covers far more than a wall-hung boiler. On a typical Preston industrial estate or business park, we might be looking after:

Each of these needs an engineer whose Gas Safe registration covers that type of appliance. A registration on its own is not enough. The engineer's ID card lists the categories they are qualified for, and those categories should match your plant.

What the law expects of your business

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 put a duty on employers to make sure gas appliances, installation pipework and flues at a place of work are maintained in a safe condition. Where equipment is used for work, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) also require it to be maintained. Steam boilers and other pressure systems come under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 as well, which require a written scheme of examination. In practice, that means three things:

  1. Plant is serviced regularly, in line with the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Any defect found is recorded and put right, or the appliance is made safe.
  3. You can show the records when your insurer, an auditor or an inspector asks for them.

The certificates and records you should hold

Commercial gas paperwork uses industry form numbers that can be confusing. The ones you are most likely to see are:

Keep them together with your asset list and any warning notices, so you can find them quickly when they are needed.

Planning the year

The businesses with the fewest breakdowns treat gas maintenance as a planned job, not a reaction to failure. A simple approach:

Larger sites, and businesses with more than one site, usually find that a planned preventative maintenance (PPM) contract makes this easier to manage.

What to do in a gas emergency

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the gas supply at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, stop anyone using electrical switches or naked flames, get people out, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Once the supply has been made safe, a Gas Safe registered engineer has to find and repair the fault before the gas is turned back on. For commercial sites, our 24/7 emergency line is 07882 898492.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a commercial gas engineer, or will any Gas Safe engineer do?

You need an engineer whose Gas Safe registration covers the appliances you have. Check the categories on their ID card, or check the business on the Gas Safe Register website.

How often should commercial gas plant be serviced?

Most commercial appliances are serviced at least once a year. Some process plant, and equipment that runs for long hours, may need more frequent visits. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and any conditions set by your insurer.

Is a gas safety certificate a legal requirement for a business?

The law requires gas appliances, pipework and flues at work to be maintained in a safe condition. Certificates such as the CP17 are how you show that this has been done, and insurers commonly ask for them.
