Every hour of every day
Plant does not choose convenient times to fail. A boiler that locks out at 3am, a burner line that trips on a Sunday or a heating failure on a bank holiday Monday all get the same response from us: a qualified engineer who picks up, listens and gets moving. Gas Safe registered 562186, OFTEC registered and LPG qualified.
An emergency motorbike for standstill traffic
Congestion around Manchester, Preston and on the M6, M61 and M65 can turn a short trip into a long wait. That is why SMR runs an emergency motorbike, a BMW GS with panniers for tools and test kit. When traffic is at a standstill, the bike keeps moving, so an engineer can reach you, make the site safe and start on the fault while a van would still be queuing.
Based at Higher Walton, close to the motorways
Our unit at Higher Walton Mill, Preston PR5 4DJ, sits close to the M6, M61 and M65, giving quick access across Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. See our Preston and Manchester pages.
What happens when you call
- Answer: You speak to an engineer, not a call centre. Tell us the site, the plant that has failed and any fault code or lockout light.
- Assess: We work out over the phone whether it is a safety issue or a breakdown, what parts are likely and how to get to you quickest, and we give you an honest arrival time.
- Attend: An engineer comes from Higher Walton or the nearest job, by van or, when the roads are jammed, by emergency motorbike.
- Make safe: Anything unsafe is isolated first. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before you call us.
- Repair: We trace and fix the fault, carrying common burner and boiler spares, and recommission the plant so production or heating can restart.
- Certificate: You get a written record of the work and, where needed, the relevant certificate (CP15, CP16, CP17 or CP42) on the day.
Downtime costs more than a call-out
On an industrial or commercial site, a gas fault rarely stops at one appliance. Lines stand idle, staff are sent home, orders slip, perishable stock is at risk and cold buildings can breach workplace temperature rules. The cost of a few hours lost often outweighs the call-out many times over, which is why speed of attendance and a first-time fix matter so much.
Why not a 9-to-5 contractor?
Many firms only answer during office hours, or pass night calls to an answering service that rings back in the morning. With SMR, the number on the van is the number that gets answered at any hour, and the engineer who comes knows industrial plant: boilers, process burners, radiant tube and warm air heating, interlocks and LPG. Contract customers on a PPM agreement get priority.
