Industrial Boiler Gas Certificates Explained: CP15, CP16, CP17 — What Preston Plant Managers Need
Published 22 September 2026 · SMR Gas Maintenance Ltd
Industrial boiler houses around Preston do not run on domestic landlord certificates. Plant managers need clarity on industrial boiler gas certificates (CP15 service records, CP16 testing and purging, CP17 safety inspections) and related Gas Safe documentation so audits, insurers and HSE expectations are met.
What plant managers should understand
- Industrial boiler work must use appropriately qualified Gas Safe engineers
- Certification and records must match the plant type
- Safety defects must be reported and closed out
Prepare before the engineer arrives
Have an asset list, previous certificates, outstanding defects, access permits and operating status ready. Store certificates digitally and link them to your PPM schedule.
Book with clarity
SMR Gas Maintenance Ltd, Gas Safe 562186, supports CP15, CP16 and CP17 industrial gas safety work across Preston and the North West.
What the engineer checks on the day
An industrial boiler inspection is more than a look at the burner. Expect the engineer to check the gas supply and pressures, the burner and its flame supervision, safety shut-off valves, controls and limit devices, the flue and its draught, and plant room ventilation. Combustion is analysed and the readings are recorded so they can be compared with the previous visit. Any defect is classified and explained, with clear advice on whether the plant can keep running. Have someone available who knows the plant and can run it up and down, as the engineer will need to see it firing at different loads.
Common reasons boilers fail inspection
- Safety devices that have not been proved working for some time
- Flue joints or terminations in poor condition
- Ventilation openings blocked or reduced
- Poor combustion readings caused by a burner that has drifted out of set-up
- Missing or out-of-date records from earlier visits
Most of these are cheap to fix if they are picked up early. Left alone, they can mean the boiler has to be shut down until the work is done.
Keeping certification on track
Treat boiler certification as part of your maintenance plan, not a one-off. Put the inspection date in the same calendar as servicing, so defects found at the service are fixed before the certificate is due. Keep each report with the boiler's asset record, and make sure someone on site is responsible for closing out the actions. If you run several boilers, or boilers on more than one site, a planned preventative maintenance contract keeps all the dates and records in one place.
